January Cod
Deep in the frozen cold of a New England winter, when fishing is the furthest thing from most people’s minds, truckloads of fishermen file down the docks and make their way onto head boats in the dark of the night. These boats depart from ports in Rhode Island and Montauk to steam toward the ledges and shoals off Block Island, often arriving before first light appears in the sky.
To the uninitiated, wintertime cod fishing might seem bizarre, but for hardy fishermen who love to be on the water, it’s an annual tradition – and a great way to bring home a cooler full of cod fillets and ward off cabin fever for another winter day.
Make sure to tune in on this special occasion, it’s the 100th episode of OnTheWater TV and the action is red hot. Take a look back over the last 10 years of filming OnTheWaterTV and meet the entire OTW crew as they jig up big cod and show you first hand how to shake those winter blues.
