In Buzzards Bay, the black sea bass spawning season runs from late May into June. Large sea bass, dressed up in their Sunday best for the spawn, feast on fish and crustaceans, as well as any jigs that cross their path.
This is exactly what Chris and I found on an early June day while filming an episode of On The Water’s Angling Adventures. The sea bass were plentiful, and no matter where we tried, we found fish willing to cooperate.
When targeting sea bass in shallow water like Buzzards Bay, I highly recommend downsizing your gear to double down on the fun. The heavy thump of a 4-pound sea bass inhaling your jig, and pretzeling a medium-action spinning rod provides fun for anglers of all ages and experience levels.
Even while using light gear, I like to use larger, bulkier jigs to help entice the largest sea bass, and avoid some of the smaller, undersized fish. However, sea bass of all sizes have voracious appetites, and eyes bigger than their stomachs.

Glon Seabass on fly rod is also quite enjoyable. Usually they’re mixed with schoolie bass, hicks, fluke, white perch etc…
